AWS managed platform for deploying front-end web and mobile apps with integrated backend services (authentication, data/API, storage, functions). Free tier includes 1,000 build minutes/month, 15 GB served, and 5 GB storage. After free tier: $0.15/GB served, $0.023/GB stored. No per-seat fees. Framework-agnostic but deepest support for React, Next.js, Vue, and Angular.
Our take
AWS Amplify's value proposition is the AWS ecosystem: when you need Cognito authentication, DynamoDB or RDS databases, S3 storage, and Lambda functions all connected to your front end, Amplify provides a coherent deployment pipeline for all of it. The pay-as-you-go pricing with no per-seat fees means 10 developers cost the same as 1 developer — a significant structural advantage versus Vercel's per-seat model for large teams. The tradeoff is developer experience: Amplify's configuration, IAM policy management, and debugging are meaningfully harder than Vercel or Netlify. Next.js SSR support on Amplify improved in Gen 2 but still lags behind Vercel's native implementation for edge cases. For teams not already on AWS, Amplify's complexity overhead is not justified. For teams fully committed to the AWS ecosystem — especially those using Cognito for auth, AppSync for GraphQL APIs, or existing Lambda functions — Amplify's integrated deployment pipeline adds genuine value.
Product roadmap
Amplify Gen 2 (TypeScript-first configuration) represents a significant UX improvement over Gen 1's YAML-based setup. AWS is investing in better Next.js and framework parity, preview environments, and tighter integration with the broader AWS service catalog. The strategic positioning is as the front-end layer for AWS-native full-stack applications.
Who is AWS Amplify for?
Free tier is useful but the configuration overhead for non-AWS users is steep. Vercel or Netlify ship your side project faster.
Per-usage pricing with no per-seat fee is great for small teams on tight budgets. Right choice if the team is already AWS-native.
Cost-effective for medium engineering teams where per-seat Vercel costs start to add up. Requires AWS competency to manage effectively.
No per-seat fees at scale make Amplify exceptionally cost-competitive for large engineering organizations already running AWS infrastructure.
