Onfido (acquired by Entrust in 2023) is one of the longest-established identity verification platforms, with coverage across 160+ countries and deep ID database integrations that make it the default for global-first compliance workflows. Atlas AI (Onfido's ML identity fraud detection engine) is trained on 1B+ document verification attempts — a data advantage that newer entrants can't replicate. The Real Identity Platform bundles document verification, biometrics, AML screening, and ongoing monitoring. The Entrust acquisition brought enterprise security credibility and expanded market reach. The weaknesses vs Persona: less flexible orchestration, higher pricing for smaller teams (no generous free tier), and a developer experience that's less polished. Onfido is typically chosen for enterprise-grade global identity programs where database coverage breadth, compliance certifications, and AI fraud detection depth outweigh developer experience considerations.

Product roadmap

Post-Entrust acquisition, Onfido is integrating with Entrust's certificate authority and digital identity infrastructure, expanding Studio (no-code flow builder) to match Persona's flexibility, and building continuous KYC monitoring for regulatory compliance programs. Global open banking integration is on the roadmap.
