Rippling

Modular HR, IT, and finance platform

Rippling is a modular workforce management platform covering HR, payroll, IT, and finance in one unified system. Its 'compound software' approach lets businesses buy only the modules they need and connect them seamlessly — payroll, benefits, device management, app provisioning, and expense management all share a single employee record.

Our take

Rippling's core value proposition is that every employee record — payroll, benefits, devices, apps, expenses — lives in one system. When you hire someone, you trigger one workflow and Rippling creates their payslip, provisions their laptop, adds them to Slack and Google Workspace, and enrols them in benefits automatically. That saves 4-6 hours of manual admin per hire, which at 25+ hires per year is a full week of work recovered. The pricing transparency problem is real: the $8/user/mo base buys you employee records and org charts, not payroll or IT. A realistic full-suite deployment (HR + payroll + benefits + IT) costs $20-25/user/mo, putting a 20-person company at $400-500/mo — more than Gusto Plus. Rippling justifies the premium for fast-growing companies where IT provisioning and multi-module automation create compounding time savings. For a stable 10-person team just running payroll, Gusto is simpler and cheaper.

Product roadmap

Rippling is building toward a unified employee data graph — where HR, finance, IT, and operations all share the same employee record and can trigger cross-module automations. The Rippling Spend (expense + corporate cards) and Rippling Finance Cloud launches signal ambition beyond HR. At $13.4B valuation, expect aggressive module expansion and potentially an IPO that validates or questions the compound software thesis.

Who is Rippling for?

Solo(1 person)
Poor fit

Overkill for solo operators. The module-based pricing and setup complexity are designed for multi-person teams. Gusto's contractor plan or a simple invoicing tool is the right choice here.

Small team(2–20 people)
Good fit

Rippling starts paying off at 15-20 people, especially if you're also managing company devices and app access. Below that, the setup complexity and opaque pricing don't justify the premium over Gusto.

Mid-size(21–200 people)
Great fit

The sweet spot. At 50-200 employees, Rippling's automation across HR + IT + finance generates real savings — each new hire that auto-provisions without a ticket to IT saves an hour or more of admin. The module flexibility lets you add functionality as teams grow.

Large org(201–1,000+)
Great fit

Rippling competes directly with Workday and SAP at the enterprise level via its Rippling Global and Rippling Finance Cloud products. The unified data model is genuinely differentiated at scale.
