Dovetail is the best standalone user research repository available. The core workflow — upload interview recordings, auto-transcribe, tag themes, generate highlight reels, surface insights — is genuinely fast. AI-powered analysis in 2024-2025 made the manual tagging process substantially lighter: Magic Summarization extracts key themes from hours of interviews in minutes. The insights board that aggregates tagged observations into actionable findings is Dovetail's strongest differentiator — it turns scattered qualitative data into shareable evidence that PMs and designers can reference. The limitation is that Dovetail is a repository, not a research execution tool: you can't run moderated interviews, recruit participants, or run surveys from within Dovetail. Teams need UserTesting, Maze, or Lookback for execution, then bring results into Dovetail for synthesis.

Product roadmap

Dovetail is expanding AI analysis capabilities (automated theme detection, cross-study pattern recognition), building recruitment integrations to close the execution gap, and developing enterprise features (knowledge graph across all research, automated insight surfacing to product teams). The research democratization trend — non-researchers running studies — is driving adoption beyond dedicated UXR teams.
