Our take

Temporal is the most capable workflow orchestration platform available — battle-tested at Uber, Stripe, Netflix, and Snap for workflows that run for days or months with complex state, fine-grained retry policies, and failure recovery. The programming model (write workflow code in regular Go/Java/Python/TypeScript, Temporal handles durability) is genuinely powerful: workflows survive server restarts, network failures, and deployments because Temporal replays history to reconstruct state. The complexity is the honest downside: Temporal has its own mental model (Workers, Workflows, Activities, Signals, Queries) that takes a week to internalize, and running Temporal self-hosted requires Cassandra or Postgres infrastructure. Temporal Cloud removes the ops burden at $25/month per namespace + usage-based actions billing. For teams whose workflows genuinely need Temporal's capabilities (long-running processes, complex branching, saga patterns), it's the right tool. For background jobs and simple async tasks, Inngest is faster to ship.

Product roadmap

Temporal is expanding its language SDK support, building Temporal Nexus (service mesh for connecting workflows across namespaces/services), and improving developer tooling (debugger, visual workflow inspector). AI/ML workflow orchestration is an emerging use case — long-running LLM pipelines with complex retry and state requirements.
