Tableau

See and understand your data

Visual analytics platform for drag-and-drop business intelligence and embedded analytics.

Our take

Tableau is the visualization standard for enterprise BI, particularly for complex, multi-dimensional analysis that requires drag-and-drop exploration beyond what SQL dashboards support. The drag-and-drop interface that made Tableau famous in 2010 is still competitive for visual analysts who need to build custom views without code. The Salesforce acquisition (2019) deepened CRM integration — Tableau connects natively to Salesforce data with pre-built Einstein Analytics templates. The cost structure is the main friction: at $75/month per Creator and $42/month per Explorer, Tableau is expensive for broad organizational deployment. Looker competes at similar pricing with a code-first model (LookML) that data teams prefer; Metabase ($500/month for teams) gives business users self-service analytics at a fraction of the cost. Tableau's embedded analytics capability (embedding dashboards in external applications) is one of the strongest in the market.

Product roadmap

Tableau is integrating deeper into the Salesforce Data Cloud, expanding Einstein AI features (natural language query, automated insight generation), and building out Tableau Pulse (AI-powered metric monitoring with natural language digests). The shift toward AI-assisted analytics drives most of the roadmap.

Who is Tableau for?

Solo(1 person)
Poor fit

Minimum $75/month Creator is high. Metabase Community (free, self-hosted) or Looker Studio (free) are better.

Small team(2–20 people)
Poor fit

Per-user cost scales poorly. Metabase Team at $500/month covers most small business BI needs.

Mid-size(21–200 people)
Good fit

Justified for teams needing advanced visual analytics and Salesforce integration.

Large org(201–1,000+)
Great fit

Enterprise deployment, embedded analytics, and Salesforce ecosystem integration match large org needs.
