Google Sheets

Cloud-native spreadsheet with real-time collaboration

Browser-based spreadsheet application from Google, included with Google Workspace. Supports real-time multi-user editing, 500,000 cell limit per sheet, AppScript automation, Gemini AI integration for formula generation and data analysis, and extensive third-party add-on ecosystem. Free for personal use via Google account.

Our take

Google Sheets' value proposition is unmatched for price: zero cost for individuals, $6/seat/month in Workspace — and you get the most capable free cloud spreadsheet available. The collaboration experience (live cursor presence, granular sharing, comment threads) set the standard that Airtable, Notion, and Coda all copied. Gemini AI integration now generates formulas from natural language, explains complex functions, and creates charts from verbal descriptions. The ceiling is data scale — 10M cell limit per spreadsheet sounds large but is surprisingly easy to hit with real operational data. Connected Sheets (BigQuery integration at Business+) bridges the gap for larger datasets. AppScript's JavaScript-based automation handles most workflow needs, though it's more complex than Airtable's formula-based automations.

Product roadmap

Google's Gemini push is landing in every Workspace product — Sheets is getting formula generation, data summarization, and chart creation from natural language. The BigQuery integration is deepening, positioning Sheets as the front end for large datasets rather than a replacement for them. Google's main strategic challenge is convincing enterprises to trust Google with sensitive operational data they're comfortable putting in Excel.

Who is Google Sheets for?

Solo(1 person)
Great fit

Free, capable, and ubiquitous. The best free spreadsheet for individual use.

Small team(2–20 people)
Great fit

Real-time collaboration without per-seat add-ons. $6/seat Workspace gives you email, calendar, and Drive too.

Mid-size(21–200 people)
Good fit

Works well until you need structured relational data (use Airtable) or BI-grade analysis (use Looker/BigQuery). AppScript automation covers many workflow needs.

Large org(201–1,000+)
Mixed fit

Large enterprises use Sheets for departmental work but hit scale limits. Connected Sheets + BigQuery extends it for data teams. IT governance teams sometimes prefer Excel for audit reasons.
