GitLab's value proposition is total DevOps surface in one tool — source control, pipelines, security scanning, and issue tracking without stitching together GitHub + CircleCI + Snyk + Jira. The per-seat cost (Premium $29, Ultimate ~$60-99) looks steep versus GitHub Team at $4, but replace the third-party tools it eliminates and the math often works out. Self-managed deployment for data residency requirements is a genuine differentiator GitHub Cloud can't match.
