Firebase

Google's mobile-first backend platform

Google's backend-as-a-service platform with Firestore (NoSQL), Realtime Database, Authentication, Storage, Hosting, Cloud Functions, and Analytics. Pay-as-you-go pricing on Blaze plan — 50K Firestore reads free/day, then $0.06/100K reads. Deeply integrated with Google Cloud and Google mobile toolchain (Android, Flutter).

Our take

Firebase wins for mobile-first and Google-centric teams. The Flutter/Firebase combination is the fastest path to a cross-platform mobile app with a backend. Firestore's real-time sync and offline-first capabilities are still unmatched for mobile use cases. The per-operation pricing model can be expensive for read-heavy applications — a viral consumer app can face unexpected Firestore bills that Supabase's flat-rate model would have capped. Google's backing means reliability at scale and deep GCP integration.

Product roadmap

Firebase is expanding Data Connect (SQL on Google Cloud SQL via Firebase SDK), Firebase AI Logic (Gemini integration for client-side AI), and improving Flutter integration. The long-term direction is bridging Firebase's simplicity with Google Cloud's breadth.

Who is Firebase for?

Solo(1 person)
Great fit

Spark free tier is generous for side projects. If you're building Flutter apps, Firebase is the natural choice.

Small team(2–20 people)
Great fit

Blaze PAYG is the right model for early-stage startups — no upfront commitment and the free daily quotas cover most development traffic.

Mid-size(21–200 people)
Good fit

Scales well for mobile-first products. Watch Firestore read costs carefully at scale — per-operation billing compounds fast on read-heavy apps.

Large org(201–1,000+)
Mixed fit

Large consumer apps often outgrow Firestore's NoSQL constraints and migrate to Cloud SQL or Spanner. Firebase remains excellent for mobile SDKs and analytics.
