Elasticsearch / Elastic Cloud
Open-source search and analytics engine at any scale
Open-source distributed search engine from Elastic. Can be self-hosted (free) or managed on Elastic Cloud (starting ~$95/month for a small cluster). Powers search, log analytics, and observability. Elastic Cloud pricing typically 20-40% lower than Algolia for comparable workloads but requires significantly more operational expertise.
Our take
Elasticsearch offers total control and lower cost at scale — but you pay with operational complexity. A self-hosted cluster needs tuning, monitoring, index management, and upgrade planning. The ELSER (semantic search) model and kNN vector search now give Elasticsearch genuine AI search capabilities that were previously Algolia-exclusive. Elastic Cloud reduces operational burden but adds cost. For teams with dedicated DevOps capacity, Elasticsearch at scale beats Algolia economically.
Product roadmap
Elastic is investing in vector search, Elasticsearch Relevance Engine, and AI-powered observability. The Elastic AI Assistant (natural language queries against your Elasticsearch data) is a major 2026 focus.
Who is Elasticsearch / Elastic Cloud for?
Self-hosting Elasticsearch is significant operational overhead for a side project. Algolia's free tier is far more practical.
Elastic Cloud at $95/month is expensive without dedicated ops. Algolia's Grow tier or Typesense Cloud covers startup search at lower friction.
Medium teams with dedicated DevOps capacity can run Elasticsearch clusters cost-effectively. The flexibility and analytics depth justify the investment.
Enterprise teams running search + log analytics + security in the Elastic Stack get unmatched depth. The ELK stack is a proven enterprise architecture at any scale.
