Bitwarden

Open source password management

Open-source password manager with self-hosting support, generous free tier, and team features.

Our take

Bitwarden is the strongest open-source password manager: the Free tier gives unlimited passwords across unlimited devices (1Password has no free tier, LastPass throttled free to one device type), and the source code is publicly auditable on GitHub. Self-hosting capability means enterprises can run Bitwarden on their own infrastructure — complete control over data residency, no third-party vault risk. Enterprise at $6/user/month includes SSO, SCIM provisioning, and custom policies, making it roughly 25% cheaper than 1Password Business. The gap vs 1Password is UX polish: Bitwarden's interface is functional but less refined, the browser extension handling of form fills on non-standard forms is less reliable, and developer tools (SSH agent, secrets automation) are less developed. For security-conscious organizations where open-source auditability and self-hosting matter more than UI polish, Bitwarden is the right choice.

Product roadmap

Bitwarden is expanding its Secrets Manager product (direct competition with HashiCorp Vault for developer secrets), improving the browser extension form-fill reliability, and building out mobile app UX improvements. The open-source community contributes to feature development alongside the commercial team.
