Our take

AWS SNS is the right choice if you're already in the AWS ecosystem and need reliable pub/sub messaging without managing broker infrastructure. The pricing is genuinely exceptional — SQS and Lambda fan-out deliveries are free, mobile push is $0.50 per million, and the free tier covers most development and low-volume production needs. The tradeoff is developer experience: configuring SNS requires navigating IAM policies, topic ARNs, subscription confirmation workflows, and SMS opt-out compliance — none of which is intuitive. Twilio abstracts all of this for SMS at a higher per-message cost. For pure AWS-infrastructure messaging (microservices fan-out, Lambda triggers, SQS integration), SNS is unbeatable. For customer-facing SMS where developer experience and delivery reliability dashboards matter, Twilio is worth the premium.

Product roadmap

SNS is AWS infrastructure — it doesn't have a product roadmap in the startup sense. AWS continues to improve FIFO topic capabilities, cross-region replication, and archival features. The trend toward EventBridge (more sophisticated event routing than SNS) means some AWS teams migrate complex event architectures to EventBridge while keeping SNS for simpler fan-out patterns.
