ADP Run

Enterprise-grade payroll and HR for small business

ADP Run is ADP's small business payroll platform — a scaled-down version of the enterprise ADP Workforce Now system. It covers full-service payroll, tax filing, workers' comp, garnishments, and benefits administration, with the brand credibility and compliance depth of the world's largest payroll provider.

Our take

ADP Run's brand carries weight that newer payroll tools can't replicate — when you tell a bank, investor, or franchise auditor that you run payroll through ADP, the conversation moves on. That credibility matters in regulated industries. The platform's compliance depth is genuine: garnishments, SUI management, certified payroll for government contracts, workers' comp integration, and a legal team behind the tax filings that ADP guarantees. The usability gap is real though — ADP Run's interface feels dated, the pricing requires a quote call for anything beyond the basic tier, and implementation support is inconsistent. At roughly $62 base + $4/employee for the Essential tier, it costs more than Gusto Simple for comparable payroll features. That premium buys compliance breadth and brand credibility — legitimate reasons to pay more if your business genuinely needs them.

Product roadmap

ADP is betting on ADP Assist — its AI layer that automates data entry, flags anomalies before payroll runs, and provides workforce insights. The ADP Marketplace app ecosystem (now 400+ integrations) is also expanding. For small businesses, the practical roadmap is simpler: ADP Run is the entry ramp to ADP Workforce Now if your company grows past 50 employees — a migration path that's smoother than leaving for Gusto or Rippling once you're embedded.

Who is ADP Run for?

Solo(1 person)
Poor fit

ADP Run's minimum costs and sales-led onboarding make it overkill for solopreneurs. Gusto's contractor plan or a basic payroll app handles this for a fraction of the cost and complexity.

Small team(2–20 people)
Mixed fit

ADP works for small businesses that need specific compliance features (garnishments, certified payroll, franchise requirements) or brand credibility. If those aren't your reasons, Gusto is simpler and cheaper at this stage.

Mid-size(21–200 people)
Great fit

ADP Run's compliance depth and multi-state handling become genuinely valuable at 25-100 employees. The platform handles complex payroll scenarios — multiple pay rates, garnishments, SUI across states — that newer tools struggle with.

Large org(201–1,000+)
Good fit

At 100+ employees, ADP Run transitions toward ADP Workforce Now, which has deeper HRIS, talent management, and analytics. ADP Run is technically a small-business product with an upgrade path, not an enterprise platform.
